It was a nice summer and I enjoyed a family day out travelling from Hythe to New Romney on the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway (RH&DR) in Kent on 5th July 2014. We travelled on an overcast afternoon and the breeze was slightly chilly when it whistled through the carriages. We travelled West from Hythe as far as New Romney, where we alighted to look at the model railway and take refreshment.
The original plan was to go all the way to Dungeness, part of Romney Marsh1, where the line ends. It doesn’t end in the usual sense with buffers at the end of the rails. The outbound line loops around the countryside until it becomes the line running back to Hythe. Trains don’t have to manoeuvre to make the return journey. They just keep going forward.
Unfortunately we travelled too late in the day. We realised that if we continued our journey, from New Romney to Dungeness and back, we wouldn’t have time to get back to Hythe. Perhaps I’ll get to see Dungeness next time.
It was a wet day this year at the GCR Winter Steam Gala 2013 (on 27th Jan). I didn’t take so many photos and the videos were short. For the most part the videos are of trains leaving stations. The event ran all day but I only arrived in the afternoon. Here is the Featured Image of No.6023 ‘King Edward II’ for those who can’t see it.
This time we (my wife and I) enjoyed a day on the trains at the Great Central Railway based at Loughborough Station. We went dining on a steam train at the Great Central Railway on 26th May 2012. This pleasure was a Christmas gift from our son. We had 1st class tickets to travel up and down the line during the day, as we pleased, together with lunch on “The South Yorkshireman”.
We were able to choose the date when we used the ticket so we chose a very good one with wall to wall sunshine. You can see our table in the Restaurant Car in this Featured Image if you haven’t already seen it. (This photo was taken from the outside through a window hence the reflections.)
It was a cold but brilliant sunny afternoon at the GCR Winter Steam Gala 2012 (on 28th Jan). I took lots of photos and videos. The event ran all day but I only arrived in the afternoon and here’s my platform ticket:
The GCR advertised 12 loco’s in steam and I saw 9. There was continual movement at the Great Central Station, Loughborough, and I did my best to capture it. I walked down to the shed at the north end of the station and found a few things to photograph and video on the way. It became very difficult to video the Royal Mail train leaving due to its delay and the hustle and bustle on the platform. I was only able to video it in the end by holding my camera above my head.
